This session will provide participants with an introduction to the Engaged Humanities and outline practical examples of Engaged Humanities projects and initiatives, including the recently launched Engaged Humanities Lab at Royal Holloway and the Citizens, Archives Alive and Storyality projects. The session will also ask participants to explore methods and approaches for co-creating research with external partners and ask them to reflect on the ways in which arts and humanities researchers can be an integral part of challenge-led research projects.

Dr Christopher Daley has over ten years’ experience working in both academic and professional services positions within higher education. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Westminster and originally worked as a Visiting Lecturer before moving into research support roles, initially within scholarly communications and more recently in posts focused on research development and research strategy. He holds voluntary roles within the Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) as a Special Interest Group Chair for Research into Research Management as well as being the ARMA representative for the Research Administration as a Profession (RAAAP) longitudinal study.

 

Dr Matthew Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Public Humanities and Director of External Engagement in the School of Humanities at Royal Holloway, University of London. His research, teaching and professional practice interests include democratic heritage and the history of rights and representation, digital storytelling, and public engagement, public history, and museum studies.

The PhD process is full of highs and lows – moments when you feel lit up about your research and moments when you feel completely disengaged.  This interactive workshop will share tips and techniques for navigating difficult periods and maintaining momentum.

Dr Emma Brodzinski is the host of The PhD Life Raft Podcast.  She is Research Associate in the Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance at Royal Holloway, University of London and practices as a therapist registered with HCPC.  She is an experienced PhD Supervisor and Examiner and runs the Breathing Space programme for Techne.  Most importantly she is a mum to 12 year old triplets, Fred the cat, and Amber and Ruby the Guinea Pigs!
